NORMAN BERGEN
From Branson to Broadway!
Norman Bergen — From Brill Building to Broadway and Beyond!
With both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, Norman Bergen’s career reads like a musical odyssey of Who's Who across American pop and stage history. He has performed nearly every genre imaginable — sharing stages and studios with legends from Neil Sedaka to Leopold Stokowski, in venues spanning the Copacabana to Carnegie Hall.
As an arranger and producer, Norman helped shape the sound of a generation. His arrangements powered the multimillion‑selling hits “Candida” and “Knock Three Times” by Tony Orlando and Dawn, defining the feel‑good pop of the early ’70s. Later, he toured and recorded with The Tokens (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”), bringing his signature keyboard touch to audiences worldwide.
On stage and television, Norman has conducted orchestras for Debbie Reynolds, Robert Guillaume, and Tony Orlando, and holds a singular distinction in Broadway history — the record for the most performances as Musical Director of a Broadway show, for the long‑running sensation Oh! Calcutta!.
During the 1990s, Norman served as Musical Director for Tony Orlando’s celebrated Branson residency, where he led dazzling live productions that drew sold‑out crowds night after night. His arrangements and direction helped define the Branson sound — blending Broadway polish with pop‑showmanship flair — and earned him recognition as one of the most versatile musical directors of his era.
As a songwriter, his ballad “Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart” has become an international standard, recorded in over 100 versions across six languages by artists including Sir Tom Jones, Wyclef Jean, Dion DiMucci, Gloria Gaynor, and Snoop Dogg.
Today, Norman continues to celebrate the golden age of New York music as he produces a documentary honoring the Brill Building studio musicians who shaped the soundtrack of American pop. Still active as a composer, arranger, and record producer, Norman Bergen brings his extraordinary journey — from hit records to Broadway lights — to the stage for an unforgettable evening of music, stories, and timeless artistry.
